Sufficiently well known to introduce self simply as “James” Had enough authority to speak in the imperative Obviously commanded the respect of his readers Probably “James the Lord’s brother” (Gal. 1:19)

1:1 – “To the twelve tribes in the dispersion” Probably Jewish Christians, scattered outside Palestine Mostly poor & suffering abuse by the rich & powerful Experiencing strife among themselves, probably b/c of their troubles
