Out of control? A. Where a city is built and how it grows depends a great deal on its physical setting. B. Montreal favorable location is on an island in a Navigable river, but the winter is long and cold. Many newer developments have been built under ground. L.A. has a mild climate all year. With all the land suitable to build houses on, it grew and grew throughout the years—urban sprawl.

Overcoming Distances Many Obstacles Trail Blazing Trails and canals
A. As people moved across the land, they encountered many obstacles. B. The first nomads blazed trails as they moved down into America C. When the Europeans came, they colonized the eastern seaboard, then they also blazed trails as they moved westward: National, Wilderness roads, Oregon and Santa Fe Trails. The building of the transcontinental railroad in 1869 was a major step in the peopling of the west—LA would probably not exist without it. F. Canada’s was finished in The US has the largest railway system, Canada’s is the 3rd largest. In the 20th century, the automobile became the primary mode of transportation in the US and Canada.
