Marilyn Monroe was found dead in the bedroom of her Brentwood home by her psychiatrist Ralph Greenson after he was called by Monroe's housekeeper Eunice Murray on August 5, She was 36 years old at the time of her death. Her death was ruled to be "acute barbiturate poisoning" by Dr. Thomas Noguchi of the Los Angeles County Coroners office and listed as "probable suicide".

Barbiturates act as central nervous system depressants producing a wide spectrum of effects, from mild sedation to total anesthesia. They are also effective as anxiolytics, as hypnotics, and as anticonvulsants. Barbiturates also have analgesic effects, however these effects are somewhat weak, preventing barbiturates from being used in surgery in the absence of other analgesics. They have both physical and psychological addiction potential and have now been replaced by benzodiazepines - for example, in the treatment of anxiety and insomnia – mainly because benzodiazepines have significantly less overdose potential

Chris Farly Tests showed high levels of morphine, cocaine and a
cocaine-related chemical in Farley's blood, and notes were made that heart disease contributed "significantly" to his death.
