1 A bit about the project…
Woodkirk Primary PE Project Newsletter Welcome Welcome to the first of our project’s newsletters. Over the course of the project, we will aim to send out a newsletter at the end of every term, to highlight and share good practice and inform you of all the events that have taken place and are due to take place. E A big well done….. Well done to all schools in the project, who have taken part in the School Games Sports Hall Athletics, it is fantastic that you are getting involved in city wide competitions. Up and Coming Events Wednesday, 28 January 2015: Year 3 to 6 Dodgeball. Wednesday 4 February 2015: Reception to Year 2 – Multiskills. Thursday 26 February 2015: Year 5 and 6 Indoor Athletics (split over 2 dates one for small schools, one for large schools). Wednesday 25 March 2015: Reception and Year 1 – Gymnastics. E Competitions This term has been very busy with competitions we have hosted the following competitions; The annual Morley School Sports Cross Country Competition took place at Woodkirk, with Westerton scooping up the prizes for all age categories – some children did qualify for the next round as individuals. Well done to all who participated. In addition to this, we hosted an Under 11 Girls’ Football Tournament. This was a new event, which was greatly received by many schools. In total 9 schools attended and, despite the cold and wet weather, it was a brilliant event, one I am pleased to say will be made annual. The event winners were Westerton at the end of a nail biting final game, which went into extra time. The last event we hosted was a Year 4 Handball competition, for schools within the project. The winners of this competition were East Ardsley, who won every single match. Excellent effort from all teams who entered. Sharing Best Practice In this section of our newsletter, we would like to highlight the good practice that is going on in the schools within the project. Firstly, East Ardsley have developed a PE notice board, which highlights achievement within the subject, as well as displaying resources to motivate and encourage during lessons. Please see the picture below, if you would the resources on the board, please speak to James or Matthew. Secondly, Gildersome have introduced a brilliant initiative, where by 4 children in each class are nominated as Sports Captains/Leaders. The leaders are responsible for leading play time activities for younger year groups, helping to keep the PE stores in order, leading warm ups in lesson and helping to set up activities. A bit about the project… The project was set up in October 2013, to help schools best use their Sports and PE Premium Funding. Initially 6 schools were signed up (Blackgates, East Ardsley, Gildersome, Hilltop, Morley Newlands and Westerton). As a result of the great success over the year, the project has now expanded to include an extra 3 schools (Birchfield, Drighlington and Morley St Francis). Each school buying into the project gets access to a qualified specialist PE teacher to deliver lessons and up-skill teachers. Additionally all schools get access to our online resource base. The project will run for 3 years in total, ending August 2017. Contributions If you feel that your school has anything to contribute to the newsletter, or have something that you feel would be sharing best practice then please speak to either Mr Wynne or Mr Walker.
