Geography Tools of the Trade Part 1

Key Question What is the difference between Absolute and Relative Location?

Relative Location Relative Location: Definition: A location of a place in relation to another place (i.e. south or downhill). Examples: The relative location of Kansas City, Missouri is just east of Kansas City, Kansas. Victoria East High school is east of Downtown Victoria

Absolute Location Definition: A point on the earth's surface expressed a global coordinate system such as latitude and longitude. Latitude: Degrees North or South of the Equator. Longitude: Degrees East or West of the Prime Meridian

The Equator Defintion: an imaginary line drawn around the earth equally distant from both poles, dividing the earth into northern and southern hemispheres. The equator is represented as 0° latitude.

Prime Meridian The Earth’s zero degree of Longitude. By convention this line was adopted in 1884 as a line that runs the length of the earth through the town of Greenwich, England.

Using Latitude and Longitude
Latitude and Longitude lines are represented as a coordinate plane on a map. The goal is to find the intersection of the line of latitude with the line of longitude. K is located at 45 degrees North, 30 degrees East
