1 DeSoto High School Dual Credit Meeting

2 What is dual credit? If a student enrolls in a dual credit course, that means that the student will concurrently receive high school credit AND credit from a Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) for the course.

3 DUAL CREDIT Advantages Disadvantages
Receive college credit at no cost to students or parents Gives students an idea of what full-time college coursework will be like Earn performance acknowledgement at graduation Disadvantages If a class is failed, it may affect future financial aid opportunities

4 Dual credit tidbits Dual credit grades will go on the students OFFICIAL COLLEGE TRANSCRIPT Students may qualify to take up to 2 dual credit courses each semester Some courses will be taken at the DCCCD campus (students will be bused); other courses will be taken at DeSoto HS. Enrollment paperwork must be completed in its entirety for ALL students. For ALL students that will be bused to CVC, their meningitis shot MUST be current (taken within the last 5 years)

5 Dual credit vs advanced placement (ap)
Dual Credit (DC) Advanced Placement (AP) Description Dual Credit allow students to simultaneously earn high school and college credit by completing courses at the high school or on the college campus. AP program allows students to take college-level courses and exams to possibly earn college credit while in high school. Credit Credit is awarded when the students pass the course. Students must pass with a C or higher to remain in the dual credit program. Students may earn college credit by making a 3 or higher on the AP exam. Note that the individual colleges/universities determine their passing score to receive credit, not the high school. COST Free Cost of the AP exam (varies)

Dual Credit (DC) Advanced Placement (AP) Teacher Taught by college instructors or high school teachers who serve as adjunct professors. Taught by high school teachers that are trained by the College Board Acceptance Credit is accepted by public colleges/universities in Texas. (Schools outside of Texas my accept credit at their own discretion) Credit is accepted at colleges/universities throughout the nation Location Some courses are taught at the high school and others are taught on the DCCCD campus All courses are taught on the high school campus

9 Step 1: Online application
Complete the on-line application at Students MUST print all 3 pages of  the acceptance letter of congratulations. (Be sure to record your DCCCD ID#) If they receive anything other than a "Congratulations" acceptance letter, they should still print all 3 pages AND complete the paper application. Undocumented students MUST complete the "Affidavit of Intent to Become a Permanent Resident" and have it notarized.  Additionally, they must provide a copy of the front and back of their permanent resident card.

10 Step 2: student profile Using their assigned DCCCD ID#, students should create an eConnect account, log in, and complete the “My Student Information Profile” under “My Personal Information.”  The link to eConnect can be found on CVC home page, or at the following link: ORE-WBMAIN&WT.svl=eClogo&TOKENIDX=

11 The counseling staff will provide a copy of the official transcript.

Step 4: meningitis A meningitis form must be provided ONLY if students will be attending classes on a DCCCD campus  The meningitis shot must have been administered within the last five years and not set to expire during the spring semester). Students will not need this form if taking classes at the high school.

All students must complete the pre-TSI and the TSI or submit exemptions.  Students can sign up in the senior suite at Desoto High school to register to take the test on-site or they can take the test at a DCCCD campus. Acceptable TSI Test Scores:                  Math- 350                  Reading- 351                  Writing- Essay 4 & Multiple Choice 363 or Essay 5
