On September 8, 1900 Galveston was struck by a hurricane with unbelievable force. There was little advance warning and the city was taken by surprise.
The storm battled the city for 12 hours.
6,000 people died in the storm.

A new commission style of city government was formed to deal with emergencies.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built a seawall and raised the city several feet to help protect it from storms in the future.
In 1915, Galveston was hit again by a hurricane, but only 10 people died.
