Introduction to the writing process
Form small groups (2-3 people) Each group will receive a type of writing that appears in our everyday lives. In your group, talk about how the writer of each item might follow the writing process. Take a few notes and be ready to share. Report out.

Course at a glance For each of the prompts below, write a response of approximately 2-3 sentences. Think of a place. Tell me a story about that place. Stay in the same place. What does it look like? Smell like? Feel Like? Sound like? Taste like? What do you do when you're in/at this place? What activities are part of your routine there? Pick one activity and tell me step-by-step how you do it.

Or, what kind of people (characteristics, interests, age, etc.) enjoy this place? Compare this place with another place. How are they similar and different? What would happen if you never visited this place again?

Think of four different events or experiences that have had an effect on you. Briefly write these experiences down in your notebook (1-2 sentences each). Keep in mind that you will be sharing your ideas.

Relaying experiences – two texts
Read Ernest Hemingway’s story “The End of Something.” Listen to Bob Dylan’s song “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right.” Summarize the event or experience that affects each text’s protagonist. Analyze the ways in which each text’s language presents the event/experience. What does each text feel like? Evaluate how much each protagonist is affected by his event/experience.

Review paragraphs Skim through the reading you did for homework concerning paragraphs. Share with a partner three ideas from the reading that you feel are particularly noteworthy. Report out.

Writing our own paragraphs
Write three separate paragraphs, each one recalling one of your three events/experiences. In one paragraph, begin with your topic sentence. In another paragraph, end with your topic sentence. In your third paragraph, employ an implied topic sentence.

Writing your own paragraphs
After writing, evaluate your own work. Share with a partner: Which of your three paragraphs is most effective? Why? Report out.
