3 Abstract Students do not usually think of an environmentalist as being someone from the past and especially someone who comes from an ethnic background that is marginalized. In this presentation, that could be used in conjunction with an Environmental Science project in the classroom, the life of a scientist from a marginalized background will be explored. This introduction to this person is intended to spark some curiosity in the students to find out about others like him from the past. Thus, there is an Environmental Science lesson and a History lesson combined. By combining both a history lesson and a science lesson, the students are able to see how a person from a marginalized background can come from the past and still have made great contributions to society even with his limitations (Banks & McGee Banks, 2013).

4 HANDOUT FOR NEW UNIT – AN ENVIRONMENTALIST
INCLUDES EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR THIS UNIT AND THIS PRESENTATION, IN CASE YOU NEED IT. THERE WILL BE SOME STATEMENTS THAT NEED RESPONSES. THERE WILL BE A WORD TO DEFINE AND ADDITIONAL WORK, IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO IT FOR MORE POINTS. THE RUBRICS WHICH WILL SHOW YOU WHAT IS REQUIRED FOR YOUR PROJECT.

5 An Environmentalist Please have your supplies ready to take some notes and instructions for later. You will be working in your cooperative teams. Title your notes “An Environmentalist” . Be ready to listen and watch. Thank you!!! 

6 HAS ANYONE HEARD THE TERM “MARGINALIZED”?

7 Marginalized means when someone is pushed to the side because they are not important. This happens in society when a group, as in a minority group, is ignored or excluded including their basic needs (Business, 2014) Today, we will be researching an environmentalist from a marginalized group.

8 The next slide is a picture of an early famous Environmentalist
The next slide is a picture of an early famous Environmentalist. See if you can tell who he is.

10 Did anyone guess or have you ever heard of George Washington Carver?

11 We will be watching a short video on Mr
We will be watching a short video on Mr. Carver which will give a short synopsis on his life and his contributions. Does anyone know anything that Mr. Carver contributed? Watch for your hint……

12 What would he have invented using these
What would he have invented using these? Take two minutes, write down your ideas, and talk about it with your team.

13 Video address for future reference: http://biography
Video address for future reference: and type in George Washington Carver in the SEARCH box. You will watch the video and take some notes. Then, we will resume the power point.

14 MAKE A DETAILED TIMELINE? MAKE A POWER POINT PRESENTATION?
IT IS DECISION TIME!!! WORKING IN YOUR COOPERATIVE TEAMS, YOU WILL BE DECIDING WHAT TYPE OF PROJECT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO. WILL YOU……….. MAKE A DETAILED TIMELINE? WRITE A RESEARCH PAPER? MAKE A POWER POINT PRESENTATION? MAKE A DETAILED POSTER?

15 WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? IS IT BECAUSE I SAID SO?
THIS IS ON YOUR HANDOUT – DISCUSS WITH YOUR TEAM AND DECIDE WHAT YOU THINK. WRITE AGREE OR DISAGREE NEXT TO EACH ONE ON YOUR HANDOUT. YOU WILL TURN IT IN WITH YOUR PROJECT FOR 20 POINTS. IS IT BECAUSE I SAID SO? IS IT BECAUSE THIS GIVES YOU AN EXAMPLE OF HOW ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE GOT STARTED A LONG TIME AGO? IS IT TO HELP YOU LEARN MORE ABOUT WORKING ALONE? IS IT TO HELP YOU LEARN MORE ABOUT WORKING COOPERATIVELY?

16 RELEVANCE THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT WORD.
FOR THIS UNIT, TO GET MORE POINTS, YOU CAN: 1. DEFINE IT FOR 10 MORE POINTS (STRONGLY SUGGESTED YOU DO THIS ONE – IT WILL HELP YOU ON OTHER UNITS!!) 2. TELL HOW GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER’S WORK HAS HELPED US FOR 25 MORE POINTS. 3. WRITE A REFLECTION PARAGRAPH FOR 25 ADDITIONAL POINTS.

17 WHAT DETAILS WILL MAKE THE POINTS? (25 PTS PER SECTION =150 POINTS
EARLY LIFE INFORMATION – BIRTH, ETC. ACADEMIC CAREER – START TO FINISH INCLUDE INFORMATION ON HIS CAREER HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOCIETY FINAL RESTING PLACE (Carver, 2014).

18 USE YOUR LAPTOPS YOU WILL NEED TO RE-VISIT TO GET YOUR INFORMATION. BE CREATIVE!!! USE LOTS OF DETAIL!!! BE ACCURATE!!! TALK WITH EACH OTHER!!! WORK IN PAIRS OR AS A WHOLE TEAM TO GATHER YOUR INFORMATION!!! GOOD LUCK!!! 

19 END OF LESSON POWER POINT Following is basic rubrics for students for chosen project.

20 ASSESSMENTS POINTS GIVEN FOR “AGREE AND DISAGREE” STATEMENTS
“RELEVANCE” DEFINITION. EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN EXTRA TIME FOR THIS PORTION AND THERE WILL BE TIME IN CLASS TO COMPLETE IT. THIS IS TO COMPENSATE FOR STUDENTS NOT HAVING ACCESS TO COMPUTERS AT HOME. GIFTED STUDENTS SHOULD DO ALL PARTS OF THIS PORTION. GIFTED STUDENTS COULD DO ANOTHER FAMOUS PERSON IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE. THE FOLLOWING SLIDES HAVE REQUIREMENTS FOR DETAILS REQUIRED FOR EACH PROJECT. STUDENTS WILL WORK TOGETHER, BUT WILL TURN IN THEIR OWN WORK. EACH WILL HAVE A COPY OF THEIR TEAM PROJECT TO TURN IN.

21 Details required for lesson projects
Washington’s guessed date of birth – Details about birth parents (Mary and Giles) and who adopted him (Moses and Susan Carver) Washington’s kidnapping as an infant and taking of adopted parents’ name. Early schooling done by Susan Carver because George was African American and not allowed to attend school. George attended a black school 10 miles away and left home to attend that school. Received his high school diploma from Minneapolis High School in Minneapolis, Kansas (Carver, 2014).

22 Details required for lesson projects
Chose to homestead a claim due to Highland University in Highland, KS not allowing him to attend due to being Black. Studied art and music at Simpson College and attended Iowa State Agricultural College in Got his Bachelor’s and Master’s from Iowa State. 1896 – Booker T. Washington hired him to run agriculture dept at African-American Tuskegee Institute. Worked on peanut crops along with pecans, soybeans and potatoes as options instead of cotton for farmers(Carver, 2014).

23 Details required for lesson projects
Developed a mobile school for farmers called Jesop Wagon which stabilized the lives of the Black farmers in that region. 1916 – Made a member of British Royal Society of Arts – rare for an American and even more so for a Black American. Buried next to Booker T. Washington on the Tuskegee property. More details are possible, but these are necessary (Carver, 2014).

24 Conclusion In order for students to realize that history can be involved with science without making it dry and boring, lessons have to be put together so they can experience it for themselves. It can be a celebration of someone’s contribution and his or her life in science. Just as well, it can add to school reform by example because someone from a marginalized group has given tools and aids for us to be better at working together and seeing each other for people of different background and cultures and that we all have something to offer (Banks & McGee Banks, 2013).
