Washington’s Farewell Address (who, when, his two warnings) Speech given to Americans by George Washington upon his retirement as President where he warns about 1. the evils of political parties and 2. involvement in foreign entanglements. One of our first two political parties, led by Hamilton and John Adams, believed in a strong central government, an economy based on manufacturing, a national bank, protective tariffs, a loose interpretation of the Constitution, and rule by the wealthy. The Federalists (leaders, what they believed in) The Democratic- Republicans (leaders, what they believed in) One of our first two political parties, led by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, believed in stronger states, an economy based on agriculture (independent farmers), free trade with no tariffs, a strict interpretation of the Constitution, and rule by the common people.. Powers not specifically mentioned in the Constitution but created through a loose interpretation. Implied powers Incident between the U.S. and France during the Adams presidency where three French agents named “X, Y, and Z” demand bribe money from American diplomats in exchange for access to French government leaders. Almost led to war. The XYZ Affair Laws passed during the Adams presidency, allowed the President to deport any immigrant that was considered dangerous to our country and also made it illegal to print or say anything negative about the Adams government. The Alien and Sedition Acts The Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions (who wrote them, why, what did they declare?) Documents written by Jefferson and Madison in response to the Alien and Sedition Acts, declared those laws as unconstitutional and a violation of our rights, also introduced the idea of “state’s rights”. “State’s Rights” (what power does this idea give to state’s?) The idea that if a state believes a federal law is unconstitutional then the state has the right to not obey (or “nullify”)that law within its borders.
