1 Microscope 8/22/17

2 Head/Body The upper part of the microscope; houses the optical parts

3 Base Located at the bottom; supports the microscope; houses the illuminator

4 Arm Middle section; Connects to the base and supports the head

5 Eyepiece (Ocular)  Know both names
The part you look through

6 Eyepiece Tube Holds the eyepiece in place

7 nosepiece Houses the objectives; mounted on a rotating wheel to change to another objective.

8 Objective Lenses Magnifies the specimen
There are typically 3 different objective lenses (x4, x10, x40, or x100) Located on the nosepiece

9 Coarse Adjustment Knob
Moves the stage up and down to help you get the specimen into view

10 Fine Adjustment Knob Moves the stage slightly to help you sharpen or “fine” tune your view of the specimen

11 Stage Where the specimen is placed

12 Stage Clips Holds the slides in place so they do not move around

13 Aperture The hole in the stage where the light passes through

14 Illuminator Light source of the microscope; usually a typical lightbulb

15 Diaphragm Controls the amount of light that can pass through the stage

16 How to prep a slide

17 Step 1: Prep The Slide Place the slide on a flat surface.
Add one drop of water to the slide. Add Specimen to the drop.

18 Step 2: Add the CoverSlip
Carefully place the the coverslip onto of the water droplet. Do this slowly so that you do not get air bubbles underneath your coverslip. If there are bubbles, CAREFULLY press down on the coverslip to remove the bubbles.

19 How to Use A Microscope

20 Step 1: Double Check your Microscope is prepared for use.
Make sure that the stage is as far from the objective lenses as possible. Rotate the nosepiece so that the lowest strength of objective lens is selected. The diaphragm is all the way open. Cord is plugged in!

21 Step 2: Situate the Slide
Move the stage clips to the side. Place the slide directly over the aperture. (MAKE SURE THE SPECIMEN PART IS OVER THE APERTURE.) Once slide is placed move the stage clips securing the slide to the stage.

22 Step 3: Adjust to Focus Using the coarse and fine adjustment knobs to focus the specimen. BEFORE YOU SWITCH TO A STRONGER OBJECTIVE LENS ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT THE STAGE IS LOWERED ALL THE WAY.
