6 The Philippines Puerto Rico and Guam were acquired as a result of the Spanish American War in 1898 Members of the US government (McKinley) wanted to “educate and Christianize” the Filipinos Emilio Aguinaldo – leader of the Filipino nationalists who spoke out against the US colonization of the Philippines

7 The Philippines (cont.)
The US defeated the Filipino nationalists in an armed conflict in 1902, the US said that they would prepare the Philippines for self rule by building RR’s, hospitals, and set up school systems US businessmen encouraged the growing of cash crops (sugar and tobacco) which led to food shortages

8 Hawaii Became a colony & a port on the way to China & East India
Sugar was the main export and accounted for 75% of Hawaii’s income The McKinley Tariff was passed and Hawaiian sugar was the same price as other sugar US businessmen were upset about this & called for the annexation of Hawaii so that they could get higher profits for the sugar

9 Hawaii (cont.) Queen Liliuokalani – came to power & called for a new constitution that would increase her power & put more political power in the hands of Hawaiians at the expense of wealthy planters The businessmen hatched a plot to overthrow Liliuokalani & Sanford B. Dole became the president & in 1898 the US annexed Hawaii
