When a force is exerted on an object and the object experiences a change in position in the direction of the exerted force. Examples of work: Lifting a suitcase upwards and placing it onto a shelf. Pushing a lawn mower across the lawn a distance of 5 m. Pulling on the handle of a wagon and moving the wagon a distance of 3 m in the direction of pull.
4
Force = push or pull in a given direction Distance =the change in position of the object. The force and distance MUST be in the same direction!
5
Work = Force x distance W = F x d
6
Work = Force x distance The unit for force = Newton. The unit for distance = meter Possible unit for Work = Newton x meter OR 1 Joule = Newton x meter The Unit for Work = Joules or J Work has the same unit as ENERGY!
7
READ entire problem carefully Create a sketch Add information from the problem onto your sketch. Look for mathematical models to help Rearrange mathematical model and plug in given values to solve. Examine your answer for units and to see if it makes sense.
8
READ CREATE a sketch Work = Force x distance Force = 20 N d = 2.5 m Work = 20 N x 2.5 m = 50 Joules or 50 J
9
READ Sketch Work = Force x distance Work / distance = Force 30J/2m = 15 N Steven used 15 N of force.
10
READ SKETCH Work = force x distance Work/force = distance 120J/30N =4 m
