Laboratory Notebook Pre-Lab includes
1 page pre-lab with questions you must answer Completion of Title, Intro, Purpose, and Procedures in laboratory notebook Write in ink ONLY! If you make a mistake, cross it out and rewrite. This is a legal document! Use passive voice in past tense. “25 mL of ethanol was added to the reaction mixture” instead of “I added 25 mL of ethanol to the mixture”. Label all data with correct units!
8
Laboratory Notebook To keep yourself organized, put data into tables.
If your data includes an excel graph, staple it into your laboratory notebook, and attach a second copy to hand into your instructor. Notebook should be used for this lab ONLY! All pages should be numbered sequentially Answer all questions posed in the manual in the conclusions, and ALWAYS explain possible sources of error (Human error is not an acceptable answer).
9
Laboratory Notebook Laboratories will usually be due the Monday after class, unless otherwise specified Hand in the yellow copies to your instructor along with any graphs attached to the back. Practice PATIENCE! Show all calculations in notebook. If several iterations of the same calculation occur, then you only need to provide one example.
10
Notebook Organization
Title: What you are trying to accomplish, e.g, to determine the density of a compound, etc. Purpose: Expand upon what the purpose of the laboratory is. Think about the information that you will obtain at the end of the experiment. Procedure and Materials: Should include sufficient information to allow the experiments to be repeated. Usually organized by bullets or numbers. Complete sentences are not necessary.

Notebook Organization
Data and Calculations: Clear tables and explanations of calculations for all analysis of primary data. I must be able to see how you came to your answers! Results, Discussion, and Conclusions: Summarize findings, discuss accuracy and precision. Answer all questions found in the manual, and discuss sources of error. Did you accomplish what you set out to do?
