Lab Equipment and Safety
Take out a sheet of binder paper and a pencil or pen to take notes with.
2
See if you can name the lab equipment in the photos below
See if you can name the lab equipment in the photos below. List them on a sheet of paper. Include their purpose.
3
A PIPETTE. is used to gather small quantities of liquid
A PIPETTE is used to gather small quantities of liquid. Similar to an eye dropper.
4
Never handle a hot beaker with your bare hands.
This is a BEAKER. It is used for measuring liquids and can be used to heat liquids. Never handle a hot beaker with your bare hands. What would you use to handle a hot beaker?
5
Hot Gloves or Tongs
6
Never put a hot beaker on a cold lab station.
Use a paper towel or other soft surface to absorb some of the heat. What happens when you put hot glass on a cold surface?
8
The Erlenmeyer Flask is used to measure, mix, and store liquids
The Erlenmeyer Flask is used to measure, mix, and store liquids. It can be sealed with a stopper. It can be heated just like a beaker. The same safety precautions apply.
9
What is the displacement method?
A GRADUATED CYLINDER is used to measure the volume of liquids. You can also use the displacement method to measure small solid objects. What is the displacement method? Look it up if you don’t know, and describe it in your notes.
10
A mass balance is used to measure how heavy something is
A mass balance is used to measure how heavy something is. There is a difference between mass and weight. Do you know what that difference is? Write it in your notes.
11
How do you use a mass balance?
Turn the mass balance on Wait for the mass balance to calibrate Place the object on the metal plate and check the mass in grams. If measuring a powder, place a “boat” or piece of paper on the scale and press the “tare” or “zero” button. Then add the powder. To tare is to zero out the mass of the object so only the mass of the powder is measured. Liquids are measured the same way, but instead of a “boat” or piece of paper, tare the container before you put the liquid in.
12
Go to a lab station and find the mass of the object
Write your answer in your notes.
13
A HOT PLATE is used to heat beakers and Erlenmeyer flasks
A HOT PLATE is used to heat beakers and Erlenmeyer flasks. It gets very hot, so be careful not to touch the heating surface when it is plugged in. Always let people know if they are too close or not paying attention.
14
GLASS STIRRING RODS are used to stir mixtures in beakers
GLASS STIRRING RODS are used to stir mixtures in beakers. they are glass, so be careful. The black tips are called rubber policemen. They help stir without hitting the glass rod on the beaker. This helps prevent cracks.
15
A TEST TUBE is used to hold, mix or heat small amounts of liquids or solid chemicals.
16
Test tube holders you may use in this class:
1. Holds multiple test tubes 2. A test tube clamp holds the tube on a stand so you can heat it.
17
A THERMOMETER is used to measure temperature.
Write down the definitions of heat and temperature in your notes and explain the difference between them. Place thermometers down carefully. They are fragile. Always measure in Celcius for this class unless you are asked for Fahrenheit.
