11. How do you use a mass balance?
Turn the mass balance on
Wait for the mass balance to calibrate
Place the object on the metal plate and check the mass in grams.
If measuring a powder, place a “boat” or piece of paper on the scale and press the “tare” or “zero” button. Then add the powder. To tare is to zero out the mass of the object so only the mass of the powder is measured.
Liquids are measured the same way, but instead of a “boat” or piece of paper, tare the container before you put the liquid in.
