Relief Printmaking Relief printing is a process where protruding surface faces of the printing plate or block are inked; recessed areas are ink free.

Firstly – why make a print rather than a drawing or painting? So where in the world was this innovative machine to print images and text first invented?

This print is full of information about Dürer’s thoughts and feelings. ’Pair and share’ – with a partner you are going to note everything that you see in the print that might have meaning. Just look closely, circle things that seem to be symbolic and write down ideas about what it might be about.

The Brief: You are going to make a relief print that communicates information about you, more than just how you look. Roughly A4 size. You could - Make a relief print based on the drawing of your hand holding an object or objects.

You could - Make a relief print based on a photograph you take of yourself expressing an idea/emotion and then use Photoshop to make it into an image suitable to work from. You could take photographs of objects if they are symbolic of an aspect of who you are. As long as you explain in your statement of intent how the image communicates a ‘self portrait’.
