1 The Successors of Henry VIII
Before his death, Henry had written an Act of Succession name his son Edward as his heir. His daughters Mary and Elizabeth were restored to the succession in this document, but would only inherit the throne if Edward failed to produce an heir.

2 The Children of Henry VIII
This official family portrait shows Henry VIII with Queen Jane and all three of his children: Jane Seymour is shown in the portrait even though Henry VIII was married to Catherine Parr at the time. Jane’s inclusion might show his continued love for her or it might be because she was the mother of his only male heir. Mary and Elizabeth are shown outside the canopy of estate as a snub to their illegitimate status

3 Edward VI Became king at ___ years old
Henry appointed a group of _____________ to act as regents until Edward was old enough to rule for himself. He was devoutly Protestant & persecuted ______________________. He died of tuberculosis at ______. He didn’t want his Catholic half-sister, ___________, to inherit his throne, so he named his Protestant cousin, Jane Grey, his successor. Son of Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour Only male heir

4 Jane Grey _____________ VII’s great-granddaughter
It is believed she ascended to the throne against her _____________. ____________ raised an army & defeated Jane’s supporters. Jane was executed for __________. Sometimes called the Nine Days Queen because of her short reign. She was married to Lord Guilford Dudley, the son of one of Edward’s ministers. John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, may have influenced Edward to choose Jane so that his son could become king. Because the Act of Succession had listed Mary as Henry’s successor after Edward, many felt her claim to the throne was illegitimate. Mary had intended to show Jane mercy if she agreed to convert to Catholicism. Jane, a devout Protestant, refused. When a group of Protestants led a rebellion in her name (probably without her knowledge), Mary was forced to execute her.

5 Mary I Mary was _____ when she became queen.
She made England Catholic again & burned over 300 Protestants to earn the nickname “____________ Mary.” Wanting to ensure a Catholic heir for England she married Prince Philip of _______________. They never had ______________. She ruled for _____ years, dying in 1558. Daughter of Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon Mary did think she was pregnant twice, but both times it proved to be a false or hysterical pregnancy. She may have died from influenza or from cancer (possible cause of some of her false pregnancy symptoms).

6 Elizabeth I Elizabeth became queen at ______.
She returned England to Protestantism, but showed __________________ for Catholics. Her reign is considered England’s _________________ age. Daughter of Henry VIII and his 2nd wife, Anne Boleyn She was a true Renaissance woman: spoke 5 languages, patron of the arts, great politician, and even wrote poetry of her own. She would never marry and was known as the Virgin Queen. Many felt a man was needed to rule England, but Elizabeth proved herself to be a very capable and powerful monarch. We will learn more about her reign next class.
