Annotations Aarthi S. Faithful Henry
Henry symbolizes faithfulness and loyalty. He had to wear three iron bands around his heart to prevent his heart from bursting after hearing the news that his master had been turned into a frog. This character is immensely significant because he represents the opposite attitude towards the prince. Everyone in the story treats the prince (the frog) very rudely. The princess treated the frog extremely awful. But after she realized the frog was really a prince, she changed her attitude. Faithful Henry always stayed faithful and loyal to his master. He represents one of the themes of the story and he adds flavor to the story by exemplifying the prince’s real nature. He shows that the prince is a very kind, caring and trusting character rather than what everyone else imagined when he was a frog. Theme Don’t judge or make assumptions based on just appearance. This is one of the themes of “Frog King” because throughout the story, everyone treats the frog differently. They all see the frog as an ugly, unwanted creature. The princess never gave the frog any respect because she thought the it was just a nasty little creature. But as soon as the frog transformed to a human prince, the princess suddenly changed her perspective on him. Her actions and attitude changed toward him. She understood he was “a Prince with kind eyes.” She realized that she treated the frog with such little respect because she thought he was just a little, mean, unimportant creature, but after seeing the prince, she understood how kind he really is.

Annotations (Continued)
Aarthi S. Annotations (Continued) The Wicked Witch In the story, the Prince tells the Princess how he was “bewitched by a wicked witch.” This is significant information because it serves as a stereotype. Like most other fairy tales had around this time, this story also includes a wicked witch. The wicked witch is mentioned very briefly, but it is important that it was mentioned at all. In several of the stories that came out around this time, most include a witch because that was the only negative magic character. “That which thou hast promised must thou perform” This line shows the moral of the story which is basically to keep a promise. The king exemplifies a true characteristic of being a leader, and as a good father he teaches his royal daughter an important lesson. “Threw him with all her might against the wall” The princess has an odd behavior towards the frog. In the many of the later versions, a kiss by the princess turns the frog back into a prince. But in this classic version, the princess commits a violent act which transforms the frog into a prince. This is a significant action because it represents the princess’s character and explains how stories were centered around violence rather than romance in the olden times.

Harrison B. History The story of “Frog King” dates back to the thirteenth century in Germany, where it was originally written in Latin. Many versions have spread to different parts of the world, such as the Scottish version, “The Well of the World’s End” that was discovered in the sixteenth century. The story had become well known in almost all of the European countries and parts of Russia, but the Grimm brothers version was the main source of future popularity. The name “The Frog Prince” came from a translation error while rewriting a story from the Grimm brothers and the name stuck.

Modern Interpretations
Allison W. & Aarthi S. Modern Interpretations Geek Charming- Dylan is a popular girl similar to the princess in Frog King. Josh was an “f-list” student. When Dylan tossed her bag into a fountain she had come across her own “frog” who was Josh. Josh needed someone to film so Dylan agreed to be in his documentary. In both, Frog King and Geek Charming the “princess” in the movie meets their “frog” in water and in the end were together. Tales from Muppetland: The Frog Prince- In this movie, both the frog and the princess are bewitched by an evil witch. The princess is cursed with a spell that forces her to speak funny, rubbish phrases and the frog was originally a human. One day, the princess finds the frog who can understand what she says. The frog explains to the princess that he really is a prince that was also cursed by an evil witch. So, the princess and the frog work together to break their spells. The “Frog King” is the foundation of the Muppets version. The Muppets version uses the concept of “Frog King” where a witch casts a spell, causing the princess and prince to come together. In both, the “Frog King” and the Muppets version, the princess ends up trusting the frog because they are so desperate.

Literary Interpretation
Manaswini P. Literary Interpretation This story represents the social criticism. This story represents this type of criticism because the little princess was playing with a golden ball and expected the frog to do everything for her and get the ball for her. The frog gets it for her and since she’s a princess, she thinks she can get away with doing whatever she wants. As a princess, she is on the highest class in the social structure which makes her think she has the right to be selfish.
