Evangelii Gaudium – The Joy of the Gospel
‘The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness’.
6
Evangelii Gaudium: The parish…...... All the baptised………
“In virtue of their baptism, all the members of the People of God have become missionary disciples (cf. Mt 28:19). All the baptized, whatever their position in the Church or their level of instruction in the faith, are agents of evangelization"(#120). “In all its activities the parish encourages and trains its members to be evangelizers. It is a community of communities, a sanctuary where the thirsty come to drink in the midst of their journey, and a centre of constant missionary outreach.” (#28)

What does Evangelisation mean to you?
What do we mean by New Evangelisation? What does it mean for you and your parish?
8
New Evangelisation ‘…….announcing of Christ by a living testimony as well as by the spoken word …’ - Lumen Gentium, 1964 (Second Vatican Council) There is no true evangelization if the name, the teaching, the life, the promises, the kingdom and the mystery of Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God are not proclaimed. - Envangelii Nuntiandi, 1975 (Pope Paul VI) "A New Evangelization has begun.“ , June 1979 (St Pope John Paul II) ‘….a commitment not to a re-evangelization but to a New Evangelization — new in ardor, methods and expression’, 1983 (St Pope John Paul II) “the purpose of the new evangelisation is ……….that every person encounters the living Christ.”, 2005, (Pope Benedict XVI) Quotes Here are some quotes, which show the development and aspects of Evangelisation and New Evangelisation: Pope John XXIII called for a ‘New Pentecost’ 1964 At the Second Vatican Council there is a reawakening to the idea that the Church is a missionary church, and that all the baptised are to be involved; and that evangelisation – the ‘announcing of Christ’ is to be by ‘living testimony’ and the ‘spoken word’ (Pope Paul VI promulgates Lumen Gentium (Light of the Nations), the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World and a major document of the Second Vatican Council. In it, the role of the laity is emphasized and esteemed, including their call to evangelize: "Just as the sacraments of the New Law, by which the life and the apostolate of the faithful are nourished, prefigure a new heaven and a new earth, so too the laity go forth as powerful proclaimers of a faith in things to be hoped for, when they courageously join to their profession of faith a life springing from faith. This evangelization, that is, this announcing of Christ by a living testimony as well as by the spoken word, takes on a specific quality and a special force in that it is carried out in the ordinary surroundings of the world.“) 1975 Pope Paul VI writes in the apostolic exhortation Evangelii Nuntiandi (‘In Proclaiming the Gospel), that must the teaching of Christ must be central; this was perhaps against a background of ‘liberation theology’ where there was a danger that a focus on social welfare and justice diminished the need for spiritual development. 1979 (June) In 1979 At the Shrine of the Holy Cross in Mogila, Poland, Pope John Paul II proclaims: "A New Evangelization has begun.“ Perhaps primarily this was about pushing back to influence of communism, but has now come to be about the pushing back of secularisation of society. (See also, 2008.) 1983 Pope John Paul II, addressing an assembly of Latin American bishops in Haiti, asserts: “The commemoration of the five hundred years of evangelization will achieve its full meaning if it becomes a commitment by you the Bishops, together with your priests and people, a commitment not to a re-evangelization but to a New Evangelization — new in ardor, methods and expression”. This is a clear direction that old ideas of sending out missionaries to places where people did not know about Jesus Christ, was now to be developed into a more sophisticated approach, to meet the more sophisticated world we live in; still to take the Gospel into new territories, but also into areas of the world were Christianity was underdeveloped, or was now being seen as irrelevant. 2005 In 2005, newly elected Benedict XVI, writing to the bishops of Latin America says that “………..the purpose of the new evangelisation is (contributing to ensure) that every person encounters the living Christ.” It is something which will be a recurring theme in our Proclaim work: is how we help the faithful develop a ‘living relationship’ with Jesus. 2008 Pope Benedict XVI makes a pastoral visit to the United States, with the following expressed purpose: "to summon the Church in America to recognize, in the light of a dramatically changing social and religious landscape, the urgency and demands of a New Evangelization." 2013 (November) In response to the 2012 Synod on the New Evangelization, Pope Francis releases Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel), a rousing apostolic exhortation that explains how and why the Church must have evangelization as its primary mission in the modern world. He also emphasizes the role of laity in calling them to be spirit-filled evangelizers and missionary disciples: "The New Evangelization calls for personal involvement on the part of each of the baptized. Every Christian is challenged, here and now, to be actively engaged in evangelization; indeed, anyone who has truly experienced God’s saving love does not need much time or lengthy training to go out and proclaim that love. Every Christian is a missionary to the extent that he or she has encountered the love of God in Christ Jesus: we no longer say that we are 'disciples' and 'missionaries', but rather that we are always 'missionary disciples.'" The New Evangelization calls for personal involvement on the part of each of the baptized……… we are always 'missionary disciples.‘, 2013 Evangelii Gaudium (Pope Francis)

Mission statements from elsewhere
To connect people to Jesus Christ and to each other. To communicate to the people of the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska and the world, the life-changing power of Jesus Christ in a practical and understanding way; to develop them into responsible, productive, successful Christians; and equip them for their ministry in the church and life mission in the world; as they become a part of God’s family, in order to magnify His name. No Limits!! We Take God at His Word. As a local church under the headship of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, The Life Center is called to serve God in Witnessing, Serving, and Worship! To teach, preach, and baptize all who will heed “The Word”. Proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ to those who have never heard and stirring churches to greater evangelistic and missions outreach. Here are a few mission statements from elsewhere. House of Prayer Evangelistic Church is a church where we “Exalt the Savior”, “Evangelize the Sinner” and “Equip the Saint”

Parish Mission Statement - putting your mission into words.
A Parish’s mission statement should clearly communicate what it is that it does. Good mission statements should be clear, memorable, concise. What do we do? How do we do it? Who do we do it for? What value are we bringing? “Our Parish …………………”
