Preparing for Success II
Tuesday 9TH February 2016
2
Are you mentally, physically and emotionally resilient?
At this time in the run up to exams it is important to think about resilience – for students, parents and teachers. It can be a stressful time of year We aim this evening to alleviate your concerns and give you all a renewed focus in the final run up to exams.
3
So, what is resilience? Revision may the only word beginning with ‘R’ that you are focusing on at present but ‘Resilience’ is also key/
4
Resilience is defined as an individual's ability to properly adapt to stress and adversity.
Stress and adversity can be felt relating to a number of scenarios, largely when things seem impossible of insurmountable. For example, having a one hour exam that will focus on 2 years worth of work.
5
Can you place a straw through the middle of a potato?
Sometimes things seem impossible.....
6
Types of resilience at school
School is not just a place to gain qualifications – although these will help open doors for your sons and daughters – but is also a place to develop life skills and resilience is one of those that we try to instil. This can be a challenge and although these demands are seen in school, there are also ways this can be fostered at home
7
Teachers want your son/daughter to be resilient in ways other
than just emotional.
8
In school, teachers want your son/daughter: to manage their workload
to be on time to class to concentrate for long periods of time to control their thoughts and emotions to enjoy challenge and problem solving. Remember – these are the expectations from 8 or more different subjects, as well as the extra curricular commitments they may have . On top of this there are demands placed on students at home. There is a lot to manage and teachers see young people coping with this in a variety of ways
9
Do you recognise any of these at home?
We recognise these traits to a lesser or greater degree in the students we teach. Do they sound familiar at home?
10
The Absentee The Snail The first category – not being there at all or being late. This could be for school or for revision/catch up classes. Things take that little bit longer to get done. However, with 14 weeks left time is now very much of the essence.
11
The Rule Breaker The Cheeky One
Type 2 – students are there but their focus is on other things – can be disruptive to the progress of themselves and others.
12
The Academic-Masochist
Type 3 – other end of the spectrum, with trying too much. This can be just as bad and causing stress through a lack of balance or not enough of a balance.
13
The Ostrich Type 4 – the most dangerous of the ‘types’ described. The exams are not going to go away. The fact that you are here tonight shows that you are understanding of that.
14
Work to the maximum! With 11 school weeks remaining it is key that the time needs to be the most productive as possible. Not necessarily working longer but working smarter. Simply rereading notes will not help most students. Website has access to suggestions for different learners, GCSE pod guide is there, ‘Upgrade guides’ for different options subjects.
15
Work to remember! Starting to get to the point when topics will e being revised and it is the memory of things that should be the focus. You can be crucial in helping this at home through the techniques mentioned.

Resilience Summary 1. If you plant doubt, it can be self-fulfilling.
2. Testing things out will often lead to better solutions. 3. Sometimes a direct approach is the best solution. 4. Overcoming a difficulty and experiencing success is a great feeling. So to summarise, now is the time to have faith, support through active revision and to keep contact with us if you have any queries or solutions. Sometimes the impossible can be possible with a little time and effort.
