1 Structural Hierarchy in Animals

2 Cell Differentiation The process by which a cell becomes specialized to perform a specific function. Directed by genetic information inside the cell An undifferentiated Cell is called a stem cell

3 Cell Differentiation Stem Cells Cells which can develop into different types of cells depending on which parts of DNA are switched on.

4 Stem Cells

5 Stem Cells Embryonic Stem Cells can differentiate into any kind of cell. Tissue Stem Cells only able to differentiate into certain types of cells.

6 Video Stem Cells

7 Levels of Organization or Hierarchy in Animals
Building An Organism! Levels of Organization or Hierarchy in Animals Forms a pyramid with the most complex structure at the top, and least complex at the bottom

8 Organism Organ System Organ Tissue Cell

9 Tissues – a group of specialized cells which provide a specific function
ex. Epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue or nerve tissue

10 Organs – a group of specialized tissues working together to perform a specific function
ex. Stomach, heart, lungs or muscles

11 Organ Systems – a system of one or more organs/structures that work together to perform a major vital body function ex. Obtain and distribute oxygen and nutrients

12 Pulling It All Together

13 Thinking/Inquiry Question
Explain how 3 organ systems work together to enable you to be mobile and active.

14 Vocabulary Stem Cells Embryonic Stem Cells Tissue Stem Cells Hierarchy Tissue Organ Organ System
