1 Draft Substances and particles: hierarchy of knowledge Particle model
How is an expert’s understanding of the subject organised? Big idea Structure determines properties The properties of a substance depend upon the type of atoms it contains and the strength of the bonds holding them together. The properties determine the uses the substance is suitable for. Unit concept Particle model Unit concept Mixtures Unit concept Solubility Sub-concepts Solid, liquid, gas Sub-concepts Filtration, evaporation, distillation, chromatography Sub-concepts Dissolving Facts Definitions of terms: soluble, insoluble, solvent, solute, solution What scientific reasoning, maths, literacy and problem solving skills are developed? Skill area Develop hypotheses Suggest a hypothesis and a way of testing it Skill area Draw conclusions Interpret information presented in a visual Draft Skill area Use maths Use quantitative reasoning and read values from a line graph Note: the content is in draft form and may change when published © Mastery Science, 2018

2 I can use my knowledge to
Substances and particles: learning stages & objectives Analytical chemist Activate I understand earlier concepts Acquire I can make sense of the idea that .. Apply In unfamiliar situations, I can use the concept to .. Analyse I can use higher order thinking to .. Particle model States Substances can be modelled as small particles in motion. Their energy and arrangement differs between states of matter Suggest a hypothesis to explain observations about changes in state Work out the state of substances from melting and boiling point information Test hypotheses about unfamiliar physical processes, in terms of particle energy Mixtures Material properties Mixtures can be separated due to differences in the physical properties of the individual substances Identify features of substances and suitable separating techniques Identify evidence from a chromatogram and explain what it shows Develop a combination of methods to separate a complex mixture and justify the choices Solutions Material properties Solubility is how much of a substance dissolves in a fixed volume of solvent and depends on temperature Calculate the mass of solute that will dissolve in a given volume of solvent Estimate solubility from graphical data Interpret solubility data to design an experiment to identify a range of unknown substances Act I can use my knowledge to Use chromatography to solve a mystery Note: the content is in draft form and may change when published © Mastery Science, 2018

3 (AQA Trilogy combined science)
Substances and particles: national curriculum Which parts of KS3 are covered? AQA KS3 syllabus: Particle model 3.5.2 Separating mixtures Which parts of GCSE are covered? (AQA Trilogy combined science) Particle model The three states of matter Mixtures Mixtures Chromatography Develop hypotheses WS 2.1 Use scientific theories and explanations to develop hypotheses WS 3.6 Present reasoned explanations including relating data to hypotheses Draw conclusions WS 3.5 Draw conclusions from given observations. What practical skills can be developed? Apparatus and techniques AT.4.C Required practical activity 12: investigate how paper chromatography can be used to separate and tell the difference between coloured substances What resources are there to teach this unit? Below are some ideas. Visit to see more teaching & assessment resources, including: Advanced planners with teaching ideas for Acquire Mastery Practice Books to practise Apply Diagnostic and summative assessments for Acquire, Apply and Analyse Teaching ideas Act Students are given the Rf value of a food colouring that has been banned. They then carry out chromatography on different sweets to find out if any contains the banned colouring Note: the content is in draft form and may change when published © Mastery Science, 2018
