Overview of the CDL Process in Idaho

First Steps at the DMV: Driver Fills out Commercial Driver’s License Application Driver Self-Certifies a driving category Driver told of Medical requirements if applicable Driver obtains a CDL manual to study

First Steps: Idaho CDL manuals are at your local Sheriff’s Office
Driver’s License office. The most current version of the Idaho CDL manual is also available online at the ITD website First chapter contains many FMCSA required changes. Read / Study applicable chapters for whatever class of CDL and endorsements driver wishes to obtain.

Medical Card & Legal Presence
Before a driver gets very far in the CDL application process, the DMV must verify the driver’s legal presence in the USA Commonly a birth certificate or passport for US Citizens, or one of several other documents Persons here on a temporary LEGAL basis can obtain a “Non-Domiciled CDL” It’s valid for the term of their legal stay. If required to have a medical for the driving category declared, the DMV will want a copy of the driver’s medical- MCSA5876 ONLY Medical cards are scanned to the Driver’s record at the DMV, or sent to ITD Headquarters to be entered

Written Tests/ Commercial Learner’s Permit
Once the driver is ready, he or she begins taking written tests When the minimum tests are taken for the Class of vehicle the driver wishes to operate, the driver may be issued a COMMERCIAL LEARNER’S PERMIT ( CLP) Driver must hold the CLP for a minimum of TWO WEEKS before he or she is eligible to take the CDL Skills test from the examiner (as of 2015)

SKILLS TEST RECEIPT Driver must pay for and obtain a SKILLS TEST RECEIPT from the County DMV to be shown to the Examiner This receipt # will be written on the test form Cost = $10 ( funds go to the county -State fund) When the driver PASSES his test, examiner will sign and date the receipt Driver returns to DMV with this signed receipt (and the test entered into the system) to obtain CDL

During the Two Weeks……. Driver should be practicing Pre-Trip and Backing exercises Driver should watch videos such as this one: This will better prepare the applicant to test with you.

Appointments / Enter applicant in CSTIMS
Applicant (or his/her company)must contact a CDL Examiner to schedule a test Determine Test type/ Restrictions “E” RESTRICTION: automatic transmission “O” RESTRICTION: NOT a TRACTOR-TRAILER “L” RESTRICTION: No air brakes Examiner must enter the test into CSTIMS at least 48 hours before the test occurs

CONDUCT CDL TEST Examiner meets with applicant at CDL Test site.
Conduct Pre-Trip Inspection Conduct Basic Control Skills Conduct Road Test

Submit Test Results to ITD / Enter Results in CSTIMS
Submit completed test form to ITD via FAX or scan/ Update test results in CSTIMS

APPLICANT MUST RETURN TO DMV TO OBTAIN CDL
I DID IT! If the applicant passes the test, he/she returns to the DMV to be issued the license If the applicant fails the test, they must wait three days to re-test Can test on the third day- i.e., fail on Monday, test on Thursday. Vote for Pedro…

Began Fall 2015 All existing CDL Holders will be advised of legal presence requirements by 2020 All new applicants must have legal presence
