BACTERIA CH. 20
2
Bacteria are prokaryotic, single-celled organisms.
Bacteria are classified in two kingdoms: Archaebacteria Eubacteria
3
Archaebacteria primitive life forms, which lack a protein found in other bacteria.
4
Methanogens (make methane gas) O2 is toxic to them.
Examples: Methanogens (make methane gas) O2 is toxic to them. Extreme Halophiles live in very salty environments. Thermoacidophiles live in high temperatures like volcanic vents.
5
Eubacteria are classified by shape:
bacilli (rod shape) cocci (round shape) spirilla (spiral shape) strepto-(long chains) staphlo-(clusters)
6
bacilli (rod shape)
7
cocci (round shape)
8
spirilla (spiral shape)

Question: If you were a doctor treating a sick patient and needed to understand what was making the patient sick, how would you do it? What kind of bacteria made them sick? Is it bacteria at all?
10
Bacteria are also classified by Chemicals they react with...
Gram stain: Gram positive look purple under microscope
11
Gram negative: look pink under microscope.
This slide shows both gram negative (pink) and gram positive(purple) bacteria together Gram neg. resist DRUGS!
13
Draw a bacterium in your notes
Label its cell structures. >Bacteria cause many diseases. Bacteria also are beneficial. >Be able to list at least 3 diseases & 3 uses of bacteria!
