Supporting CLARREO project
Action: A.GWG e.1: GRWG to coordinate with B. Wielicki + Exec panel the writing of a white paper to support the CLARREO project “The Need for On-Orbit SI-traceable Hyperspectral Reference Instruments for Satellite Inter-Calibration(GSICS)” presented to GSICS-EP-18-Doc-7.1 CGMS-45 WG II/6 Selected topics of high priority to members Update on CLARREO project provided by Tom Stone (10f)
15
Need for RAC and demo product for VIS/NIR
The use of FCDRs as inter-calibration references Currently being pursued by SCOPE-CM, based on the time series from multiple HIRS instruments Will be tied to IASI as an anchor reference(following the FIDUCEO project) Agreed that RACs can support the generation of FCDRs Decision : GSICS member agencies generating RACs are required to regenerate them for the entire record of each monitored instrument in event of a major version change in the processing algorithm The topic of generating prototype/demonstration products for the VIS/NIR channels of GEO imagers An important step to obtain feedback to guide further development The current strategy for VIS/NIR products was on the right track EP was requested to provide more resources within the member agencies to support the generation and distribution of demonstration products
16
Aid to Users Selection of GSICS Products
User need : Required accuracy or level of uncertainties, sensitivity of products to the calibration Some of this information in the User Guides, accessible from the GSICS product Catalog Need to standard the info provided to the users Suggestion for format of user guide : should include the information of sensor over whole operational time The simple document including the description of dataset Some information need to be detailed for climate application including near-real time use Advantageous to provide basic information of the typical calibration biases of each instrument, derived from the GSICS Corrections, together with their variability and a statistical summary of the quality of the GSICS Corrections
17
Collaboration with ISCCP
GRWG WGII/4 A44.05 GRWG to discuss with ISCCP (SCOPE-CM Project 9) a detailed project proposal for the use of GSICS methodologies to produce a GSICS-compliant ISCCP dataset for evaluation CGMS-45 OPEN 5.1 (HLPP ref) Review the history of ISCCP activities(phase I : ) and discuss collaboration between ISCCP and GSICS Phase II will cover extended period ( , ) Cloud products uncertainties are limited by atmospheric correction rather than calibration ISCCP calibration three stages(Nominal, Normal, Absolute (temporally stable)) VIS is based on vicarious terrestrial targets while IR based on the CDFs ISCCP data cannot be used for temperature trends, but can trend some cloud products (e.g. cloudiness) ISCCP could evaluate the impact of GSICS Corrections for GEO imagers on ISCCP cloud products, based on case studies GPRC to provide tables that map IR (11µm) counts to radiance and/or TB GPRC to produce/provide a table mapping VIS (0.6µm) counts to radiance/scaled radiance if possible Updated tables for the month of Dec 2009 are the target (other months are also available)
