CHAPTER 3 – THE SCIENTIFIC PROCESS
3.3 The Nature of Science & Technology pp
2
TRUTHFULNESS IN SCIENTIFIC REPORTING
See handout re: The Piltdown Man Which step of the scientific process did scientists who disproved the existence of the Piltdown man contribute to?
3
SCIENCE MAGAZINE ACTIVITY
Look at some of the articles in the magazines given to you. What are some of the topics being explored by scientists?
4
SCIENCE MAGAZINE ACTIVITY
Find an article of interest to you and your group. Create a PowerPoint or brochure to describe experiments the scientists designed.
5
SCIENCE MAGAZINE ACTIVITY
Identify and address elements of experimental design. (i.e. What was the research question and how was the investigation carried out?) Describe scientists’ hypotheses, identify the variables involved in the research and discuss the data collected and conclusions reached. Discuss the implications of the research.
6
MODELS What is a model? Why are models important? Are all models physical? What are some examples of models?
7
TYPES OF MODELS A physical model is a representation of a model or system. It looks like the thing it represents.
8
MODELS A mathematical model is made of mathematical equations and data.
9
MODELS Conceptual models are systems of ideas or are based on making comparisons with familiar things to explain an idea. Oreo cookies can be used to explain the phases of the Moon.
10
TECHNOLOGY, SCIENTISTS & ENGINEERS
Technology – the application of science to meet human needs and solve problems. Engineers design technology to solve problems. Scientists study the natural world to learn the basic principles behind how things work. Engineers use scientific knowledge to create or improve inventions that solve problems.
