5 Armed Conflict More than 2 million children have died in armed conflicts in the past decade. At least 6 million children have been seriously injured or disabled Disruption of the local water and electricity supplies in times of armed conflict increases the spread of disease in war-affected areas. War also causes emotional and psychological damage in children, especially when they are orphaned or separated from their families. It prevents children from getting an education. UNICEF tries to protect children in these situations with medical help, shelter, finding their families, and getting back to school.
