1 SHAPE & SPACE Squares & Square Roots

2 Review What is the area? Area of a square = s x s = s2 = 4 in x 4 in

3 What is 22 ? 2 8 4 10

4 What is 32 ? 12 9 6 3

5 What is 5 squared ? 10 20 50 25

6 What are those numbers called? (4, 9, 25)
PERFECT SQUARES!!

7 PERFECT SQUARES 2 3 22 = 4 32 = 9 2 3 4 5 42 = 16 52 = 25 4 5 (2x2)

8 Perfect Squares 1, 4, 9, 16, 25 36, 49, 64, 81, , 144, 169, 196, , 289, 324, 361, 400

9 What if we had a square with area:
What is the side length? 100 m2 10 m 10 m x 10 m = 100 m2 10 m

10 Square Roots

11 What are square roots? Opposite or inverse of squares
Similar to + / − or × / ÷ Represented by:

12 3 squared or 32 or 3x3 all equal 9
Square Roots Remember how 32 = 9 What is the inverse of this equation? 9 = What number squared? 3 squared or 32 or 3x3 all equal 9

13 Square Roots How does that look in square roots? = ? 16 When we see the square root symbol (√) we need to find a number that multiplies itself to get the number inside the square root (16).

14 So what is the number when multiplied by itself gives us 16?
4 x 4 = 16 or 42 = 16 = 4 16

15 Square Roots: Practice
