1 Your table must come up with a list of factors that an organism must have in order to be considered “living” ** hint: there are 8 characteristics **

2 Front = Living Back = Nonliving
Pick a Side Front = Living Back = Nonliving Get a box full of items or of pictures of items; as you pull them out students will move to the front of the items are living and to the back if the items are nonliving Examples of items to put in the box: tennis ball, rubber snake, specimen, apple/grapes, tree/plants, butterfly, sunflower, egg, seeds, car, soccer ball, pizza, mushroom, fire, water, dinosaur, people, phone

3 Characteristics of Life
What makes something living?

4 What is living? BIOTIC--a living organisms ABIOTIC--a nonliving factor
Do dead organisms count as living or nonliving?

5 8 Characteristics of Living things
In your notebook write the following acronym down the left side, leaving room for explanation of each MR H CREGO

6 Metabolism An organism gets and uses energy Ex. Food, sunlight

7 Reproduction Process by which living things produce offspring

8 Homeostasis Keeping a constant internal environment; staying stable

9 Cells containing genetic material
A cell is the basic unit of structure and function of living things Cells containing genetic material Living things must contain cells; 1 cell or 1 billion cells Single celled organisms have everything they need to be self sufficient

10 Respond To Stimuli All living things detect changes in their
environment and respond to them If you step on a rock it will not respond because it isn’t a living thing, if you step on a turtle it may

11 Evolution (Evolve and Adapt)
Living things evolve or change and adapt over time; not a single organism but their entire species

12 Growth All living things grow and develop over time; grow
is to get bigger and develop is to mature

13 Organization Living organisms single and multi cellular have different
levels of organization

14 Launch Video: You are living. Find your purpose.
