2 A Few Refreshers Noun: Person, place, or thing Examples: girl, school, book Proper noun: Specific person, place, or thing Examples: Miss H., Kennedy HS, The Hunger Games Adjective: Word that describes a noun (often emotional terms, colors, sizes, rankings) Examples: Happy, sad, red, blue, big, small, excellent, horrible Verb: Action words (ANYTHING that you DO) Examples: Run, walk, yell, laugh, play, see, etc.

3 Tips on Test-Taking When matching, always pay attention to the definition. If it begins with “to,” it is a verb (i.e. Walk: to move by taking steps) If the definition contains adjectives, the word is an adjective (i.e. Cheerful: happy; bubbly) If the definition contains “a/an” or “the,” it is a noun (i.e. Tree: a plant rooted in the ground, consisting of a trunk, branches, and leaves)

4 Fill In the Blank Pay attention to where the blank falls and what type of word belongs there Words: excited; field trip; ride The students were ____________ for the ____________ to Salem, Mass. They’d have to ____________ on a coach bus to get there. Or: They’d have to take a long bus ___________ to get there.

5 Adulation (n.) Flattery; admiration
Celebrities often receive a lot of adulation from impressionable fans.

6 Artisan (n.) Manually skilled worker; craftsman
Miss H.’s dad was a welder, an artisan who could make just about anything out of metal.

7 Disclose (v.) To reveal Workers in the medical field are not allowed to disclose any information about their patients.

8 Dogmatic (adj.) Opinionated; personally-based as opposed to fact
Ashley’s blind date was so dogmatic that he even tried to convince her that the world is flat.

9 Hierarchy (n.) Arrangement by rank or standing
Corporate America is a hierarchy based on what position one holds within a business.

10 Homogeneous (adj.) Composed of identical parts
A Kit-Kat bar would be considered homogeneous, since each piece is the same.

11 Listless (adj.) Lacking in spirit or energy
After ten straight losses, the baseball team made a listless entrance into the arena.

12 Meticulous (adj.) Excessively careful; overly specific
Grandma was so meticulous about keeping her white carpet clean that no one was allowed to enter the room!

13 Raze (v.) To destroy completely
The neighborhood was devastated after the town council agreed to raze the oldest, prettiest house on the street.

14 Stagnant (adj.) Motionless; stale; dull
The only water left after the drought was stagnant and unhealthy for animals to drink.
