mass of solute + solvent
Concentration -Parts per million (ppm) = a ratio of one part of solute to one million parts of solvent; usually applied to very dilute solutions -Percent composition = ratio of one part of solute to one hundred parts of solvent; expressed as a percent. -To calculate parts per million and percent composition: -determine the mass of solvent and solute -divide the mass of the solute by the mass of the total mass of the solution (solute + solvent) mass of solute mass of solute + solvent

Concentration Once you have done the above, see below:
NOTE: IF IT ALREADY SAYS MASS “PER” MASS, YOU DO NOT NEED TO ADD THE SOLUTE & SOLVENT MASSES TOGETHER -For ppm, multiply by 106 and express as parts per million (ppm) mass of solute × 1,000,000 = ______ ppm mass of solute + solvent -For percent composition, multiply by 100 and express as a percent mass of solute × = _______ %

Concentration Practice
Answer the following questions: Note: 1 cm3 H2O = 1 mL of H2O = 1 g of H2O Fish need about 5 ppm O2 dissolved in water to survive. Will water with .007 g O2 per 1000 g of H2O sustain fish? What is a concentration of the following solutions expressed in parts per million? A 4 g sugar cube (Sucrose: C12H22O11) is dissolved in 350 g of 80 °C water in a teacup. What is the percent composition by mass of the sugar solution?
