How I became involved in ACS CAN
Met James Sharp, ACS-CAN KY Grass Roots manager at the time, in October 2012 when I presented “Treating Pain and Preventing Abuse: The Societal Balancing Act,” at Kentucky Cancer Consortium quarterly meeting. ACS-CAN national interest in pt QOL and PC Became ACT Lead This was how I fell into it…but looking back, I have ideas about how you can be deliberate about getting involved in advocacy…

“Establish a Palliative Care and Quality of Life Interdisciplinary Action Council to improve the quality and delivery of patient-centered care” “Establish…the statewide Palliative Care Consumer and Professional Information and Education Program within the cabinet” Require that “all health facilities shall establish a system for identifying patients or residents who could benefit from palliative care” Brought to KY, James passed baton to Erica Palmer Smith

Identify and recruit new volunteers – Are you an ACS CAN member? Educate and train volunteers on ACS CAN priority legislation Plan and execute Day at the Capitol Advocate Social media Work closely with Government Relations Director to help move legislation Kristy take over here—what does the grassroots manager do to gain support for legislation? How does it work? Rally the troops.
