Franklin D. Roosevelt - Rallied a frightened nation by saying “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” Believed in increasing the size and power of the federal government to regulate big business and the economy Believed in using DEFICIT SPENDING Used government funds to aid the poor during these desperate times Hoover refused to do this

Franklin Roosevelt’s “New Deal”
FDR created and passed many new laws and social programs that were funded by the federal government to pull the country out of the Depression. It was about RELIEF, RECOVERY AND REFORM!

The First Hundred Days: Congress passed 15 major pieces of legislation to provide RELIEF to American citizens and businesses Formed the “Brain Trust” (a group of economic experts that will advise him as he creates programs)

FDR creates a Bank Holiday - closing all banks and inspecting them before reopening them.
Fireside Chats: Roosevelt used the radio to speak to Americans- he tried to calm their fears and assure them help was on the way.

Roosevelt feared the Supreme Court would challenge New Deal legislation- He proposed to “pack the Court” by adding 6 additional justices (15 total) to ensure a majority vote. Congress was outraged….

The second 100 days would focus on RECOVERY and REFORM efforts - Trying to prevent this from happening again.

Opposition to FDR: Liberals (left) felt FDR’s program was NOT doing enough Conservatives (right) felt that government intervention was TOO much and interfered with our free market economy Strongest opponents: Father Charles Coughlin Huey Long

Second New Deal Started with FDR’s reelection in this was just a continuation of the first New Deal. FDR included women and African Americans in the federal government and would appoint the first women to a cabinet position FRANCIS PERKINS. She served as the Secretary of Labor and played a major role in creating the social security system.

First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt served as FDR’s “legs and eyes” as she toured the nation
Eleanor became the “conscious of the New Deal” as she expressed concern for the needs of the American people She was the first First Lady to give lectures, radio broadcasts, write a daily newspaper column, and speak out on behalf of African Americans

FDR’s impact on the Great Depression:
Increased the size of the federal government through his new deals. Creates federal jobs Attempts to regulate supply and demand Increases government participation in settling labor and management disputes. Offered hope and brought back people’s dignity. The end of the Great Depression does not occur until the US enters WWII

New Deal Programs The New Deal focused on the three “Rs”
Relief Relief checks and job programs to lower unemployment Recovery Programs to stimulate agriculture, industry, and the economy to end the depression Reform Programs to correct problems in the economy and prevent future depressions Find agencies starting on Pg. 696
