1 THE THREE STATES OF MATTER
OK – really there are 4 states of matter. And some scientists think there are 5! We are studying the 3 “classical” states of matter .

2 Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
What is matter? Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

3 Properties of Matter How It Looks (Shiny ,Dull, Color, etc.)
How It Feels (Hard, Soft, Rough , Smooth, etc.) How It Smells (Sweet, Sharp, Terrible, No Smell, etc.) How It Sounds (Loud, Soft, Echo, No Sound, etc.) What It Does (Bounce, Stretch, Tear, Break, Magnetism etc.)

4 SOLIDS

5 SOLID A solid is matter that has that has definite size and shape.
Example: Put a sneaker in a box. It stays the same. Molecules in a solid: The molecules in a solid are packed tightly together and do not move very much.

6 Liquids

7 A liquid takes the shape of any container.
Example: Pour juice into a glass. The juice will take on the shape of the glass. Molecules in a liquid: Molecules in a liquid are loosely connected and can “flow” – move a little, but they don’t fly apart.

8 GAS

9 Gas Gas is matter that has no definite shape. Gases take the shape of whatever container they are in . Example: The air all around us is a gas. The molecules in a gas float freely around – they move a lot and do not stay in one place.

10 Physical changes in matter
A Physical change is a change in how matter looks, but not the kind of matter is it is. Tear Cut Folded Crumbled Smushed Mixture (salt in water, we can still get the salt back if the water evaporates)

11 PHYSICAL CHANGES

12 Chemical changes in matter
New Matter is formed. Burning Rusting Cooking We cannot get the original matter back – once we burn a log in a fireplace, it will never be a log again.

13 CHEMICAL CHANGES

14 All matter is made up of tiny particles called “atoms”.

15 Atoms combine together to form “molecules”.

16 Let’s watch a video clip about matter!

17 Is this a solid, a liquid, or a gas
Is this a solid, a liquid, or a gas? Can you find more than one type of matter in any of the pictures?

18 Is this a physical change or a chemical change
Is this a physical change or a chemical change? Can you find more than one physical or chemical change in the pictures?

19 Thanks to Mary Beth Masters of Wise County for the initial slide show which I merely modified.
