On the outside of the flaps… Addition Property of Equality Subtraction Property of Equality Multiplication Property of Equality Division Property of Equality
7
Properties of equality
Addition Property of Equality: If you add the same number to each side of an equation, the sides are still equal. If a = b, then a + c = b + c Example: x – 3 = 2
8
Properties of equality
Subtraction Property of Equality: If you subtract the same number from each side of an equation, the sides are still equal. If a = b, then a - c = b - c Example: x + 3 = 2
9
Properties of equality
Multiplication Property of Equality: If you multiply each side of an equation by the same number, the sides are still equal. If a = b, then a • c = b • c Example: 𝑥 3 =2
10
Properties of equality
Division Property of Equality: If you divide each side of an equation by the same number, the sides are still equal. If a = b, then a ÷ c = b ÷ c Example: 5𝑥=20

How to solve an equation
In order to solve an equation, you must isolate the variable. Isolate: Using properties of equality and inverse operations to get a variable with a coefficient of 2 alone on one side of the equation. In other words…. When you isolate a variable, you are getting it alone.
12
What are inverse operations?
Inverse Operations: Operations that undo one another. THESE ARE OPPOSITES!! What can undo multiplication? What can undo subtraction? What can undo division? What can undo addition?
13
What is the solution of x + 13 = 27?
Check your answer!!
14
In the last problem, why does subtracting 13 from both sides of the original equation result in an equivalent equation?
15
You try: What is the solution of y + 2 = -6? Check your answer!
