DNB provides more low cloud structure City Lights
:00 GMT (Full moon) VIIRS DNB Night MODIS Low Clouds (Red) Lake Ontario DNB provides more low cloud structure Multi-channel IR low cloud enhancement technique is applied to NASA MODIS data over the Great Lakes region on May 5, 2012 at 0600Z (Full moon conditions). The low clouds are mapped in red pixels, cyan colored pixels are at higher levels. The corresponding Suomi NPP VIIRS Day Night Band (DNB) imagery used lunar illumination to view reflected light off of cloud tops, in this case the low clouds over Lake Ontario and the surrounding region. Bright yellow pixels are city lights and green is used to outline the geopolitical boundaries. Blue pixels highlight the IR channel identifying convective clouds with vertical development. Acknowledgments: Naval Research Laboratory, Marine Meteorology Division Jeremy Solbrig, Tom Lee, Steve Miller, Kim Richardson, Mindy Surratt, Arunas Kuciauskas, Rich Bankert, Jeff Hawkins, and John Kent (SAIC) MODIS data is provided via NASA LANCE in near real-time VIIRS data is provided by CIMSS Peate via NOAA CLASS and direct readout for CONUS.
