I Thessalonians 5:12-13 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.

I Thessalonians 5:14-15 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.

B. Encourage the timid. 1. Timid (ὀλιγόψυχος) = weak- souls; those whose faith has never developed.

B. Encourage the timid. a. What happened? Matthew 13:7 - Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.

B. Encourage the timid. b. What do we learn? Matthew 13:22 - The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life & the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful.

B. Encourage the timid. 2. Who are they? A church member who hasn’t grown spiritually in 20 years. Encourage them to grow in their faith!

C. Help the weak. a. What happened? Matthew 13:5-6 - Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root.

C. Help the weak. b. What do we learn? Matthew 13: The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away.

D. Be patient. 1. Patience (μακροθυμέω) = long or slow to display anger or come to conclusions. Trench: “a long holding out of the mind before it gives room to anger!”
