The Definition of Data Statistics is the science of collecting data, analyzing, interpreting or explaining, and presenting data. Stage in a Statistical Investigation Identifying the problem. Collecting Data Studying Data Drawing conclusions and making decisions.

Measuring (observation, survey, questionnaires) Data recording (by tallying)

Student’s activity Collect the data on the shoes number of your classmates! Collect the data on the birthday of your classmates! Collect the data on the parental occupation of your classmates!

Find the highest and the lowest value from the data: 5,4, 7, 3, 2, 3, 3, 4, 6, 5, 6, 9, 8, 4, 8, 5, 7 X max= … X min = … Range = …

Sample and Population To find out the taste of a soup in a pan, we only need a spoonful of it, in this case: The whole soup in the pan constitutes a population A spoonful of soup taken constitutes a sample

So what is the difference between population and sample?

Population is all the objects being studied
Sample is a part of population being studied or observed
