Turn to pg. 287 in your text and read “From Strangers to Neighbors” individually or with a partner(s). Answer the questions on the bottom of the paragraph: What caused John Rutledge to travel to New York City? Why were the colonies like different countries? How did learning about the Iroquois League affect colonists? John Rutledge: He “was the second Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States and the first Governor of South Carolina after Declaration of Independence” (Wikipedia)

Fighting for Control Turn to p. 295 in textbook:
Analyze the map in the top right corner Who can we tell is the most powerful? Why? Why do you think countries wanted to claim land? What is so significant about having land near a body of water? What is so SIGNIFICANT about the Ohio River Valley? Ask students to pull out their cause and effect charts and add/go over them during this time when working through these pages of the chapter.

More Trouble! The lands between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River were under British control because they won the war. Colonists wanted to settle in the land, which used to belong to the Native Americans. The Native Americans got so angry, and under the leadership of a Native named, Pontiac, together the Native Americans worked together to capture some of the British forts. Why do you think they did this? Put yourself in the shoes of a Native American….what would you do? Put yourself in the shoes of a British colonist who wants to settle in the area that is now theirs due to winning the war. What would you do? How would you react and why?

Writing a letter to the King
You will write a letter to King George III from the perspective of a Native American who has been fighting hard for his right to have a place to live freely. Ms. Taggart will give further instructions Introduce In class and turned in the next day! This is informal, it can be done in notebook!

Summary of Today’s Lesson
”Conflicting land claims in North America led to the French and Indian War. Britain defeated France in the war. After the war, Britain issued the Proclamation of 1763, but many colonists ignored it and kept moving west.” (p.299)
