3 Chapter 12 Surface Area and Volume of Solids
12.6 Surface area and Volume of Spheres

4 A Sphere is the set of all points in space equidistant from a given point. That point is called the center of the sphere. A radius of a sphere is a segment from the center to a point on the sphere. A chord of a sphere is the segment whose endpoints are on the sphere. A Diameter of a sphere is a chord that contains the center.

5 Surface Area of a Sphere: Volume of a Sphere:

6 If a plane intersects a sphere, the intersection is either a single point or a circle. If the plane contains the center of the sphere, then the intersection is a great circle of the sphere. Every great circle separates the sphere into two congruent halves called hemispheres.

12 feet. The interior height of the interior sphere is 7 ft. What is the volume inside the outer ball and outside the inner ball? How do we have to do this?

9 Example The diameter is 9 so the radius is 4.5 inches.

10 Example 5 Volume of the solid = Volume of the cylinder – volume of the hemisphere Volume of the solid is about 8.38 cu in
