Kotter’s 8 at St. Cloud State
QM as a System Establish a sense of urgency Form a guiding team Develop a vision Provide effective communication Empowerment Short-term wins Be persistent (don’t quit) Sustainability What are you hoping to learn from my presentation?

Some Challenges Is this possible? Stating the goal.
Determining how to proceed. Identifying who can help. Gaining faculty support. Gaining administrative support. Ensuring we finish the project. Will this be maintained? Have you faced a similar challenge at your institution?
5
The vision for online education at SCSU is unclear
The vision for online education at SCSU is unclear. Confusion, anxiety, frustration occur as we move forward. Do you see your institution here?
6
It’s Urgent Increase enrollments and retain current students.
Increase the number of online courses and improve the quality. The number of students taking distance education courses in the state increased by 7,615 (or 4.3%) between fall 2012 and fall 2015 (Distance Education State Almanac, 2017). 126,149 students in Minnesota are taking all of their courses at a distance (Distance Education State Almanac 2017) What drove the need for change? Evidence from outside the organization showed change was required (Distance Education State Almanac 2017; Babson Survey, 2016; Advancing Online Education, 2016). More students enrolling in online courses.

We Need You Identify Faculty Champions
We identified faculty who supported QM on the campus. We knew we needed a strong team to champion our efforts, so we approached faculty who had been QM trained. 273 faculty QM trained 110 APPQMR (May 2015) We communicated the goal for online course quality. The evidence from outside the organization demonstrated that change was required. Report from Advancing Online Education 2016 (MNState).

Quality Design Develop a strategy to improve quality.
Expand innovative use of technology. Promote Quality Matters Professional Development. Promote MOQI Webinars. Promote STAR Symposium. Our plan for faculty development aligned with the Charting the Future Work Plan ( ), the Strategic Framework Goals and Priorities (2016) and the Husky Compact.
9
Communicate Developed a common goal. Partnered with CETL to announce training sessions. Held Brown Bag sessions. Master Reviewers/Peer Reviewers met with faculty. Promoted QM Self-Review. Online Course Design Workshops. Focused on faculty support/online pedagogy. Found the right people to support our common goal. Partnered with CETL to increase faculty participation.
10
Empower Increased opportunities for technology innovation and recognized faculty who were experimenting. Provided QM training for faculty and established ongoing communication with faculty who attended the sessions. Encouraged use of QM Template in D2L course. We worked to make the structure compatible with our goals. Providing QM training and supporting the faculty who attended MOQI and QM sessions seemed to help anchor the need for improvement and quality. Partnering with CETL helped increase campus awareness.
11
Celebrate Recognized faculty who had regular attendance at MOQI sessions. Recognized faculty who presented at QM conferences and/or STAR Symposium. Recognized faculty who are QM Certified. Overall increased faculty interest in QM Recognition of the short term wins is ongoing. We continue to strive for increased faculty support. Partnered with CETL to promote T4TL and increase faculty awareness of technology tools.
12
Persist/Maintain Our focus is faculty support, course quality, and formal QM training. Need ongoing technology support. A campus effort but also a MN State effort. MN State supports QM quality design. We are continuing to make small improvements. This has not been linear; we have shifted back and forth and jumped around. We know that change takes time; however, we have seen some progress.

Questions? Is your institution facing a similar challenge?
How might this help you at your institution? Do you have advice to share? Other change theories used?
