2 Vision We seek to create a world in which all students in our country can make use of pathways that weave together geoscience learning with opportunities to use that knowledge to serve their local community.

3 Vision We seek to create a world in which all students in our country can make use of pathways that weave together geoscience learning with opportunities to use that knowledge to serve their local community. Individually these pathways strengthen and diversify the geoscience workforce and the geoscientific capacity of the communities.

4 Vision We seek to create a world in which all students in our country can make use of pathways that weave together geoscience learning with opportunities to use that knowledge to serve their local community. Individually these pathways strengthen and diversify the geoscience workforce and the geoscientific capacity of the communities. Collectively, the participants create a force for global sustainability and resilience.

5 Growing Geoscience Capacity to Address Local Issues
Learn geoscience in the context of compelling local issues Use geoscience to address local challenges Explore geoscience career pathways At multiple levels in the path from middle school to the workforce Relevance and empowerment through immediate use Focus of our research effort

8 What is a Regional Alliance?
A local group creating pathways that weave together opportunities for geoscience learning with opportunities to use that knowledge to serve their local community. Grounded in existing learning opportunities Grounded in community and existing efforts to address local issues of importance

9 EarthConnections Pathways:
1) Are embedded in the local community 2) Use geoscience to address a local need or problem 3) Connect learning opportunities at multiple educational levels 4) Couple opportunities for classroom learning with opportunities to use knowledge in community service at each level 5) Use mentoring and signposting to support students in recognizing and navigating the pathway.

10 Leveraging Existing Academic Relationships and Programs
Local Issue: Earthquake readiness Community partners: High Schools Colleges and Universities Professional Groups Activities: Planning Meetings Field trip for geology clubs Teaching practices workshop Leveraging existing academic relationships and programs

11 Supporting Regional Alliance and Pathway Design and Development
Financial support for local backbone activities Consultant team to assist with alliance development, pathway design and connection to program partners Participation in a cohort based pathway design and development process Financial support for collaboration with program partners Participation in the national Earth Connections community of practice Examples from Margie of partner/regional alliance interactions Examples from Donna of consulting corps experience Examples from Kevin or Cathy of community of practice activities Discussion of pathway design and development process with Ellen

12 Regional Alliances Commit To
The projects shared vision of using regional alliances to create EarthConnections pathways Working with consultant team and participating fully in the cohort based design and development process Participating fully in the COP Collecting evidence of progress and impact at the regional level and participating in EC evaluation and research Being a good EC citizen: communicating, responding, sharing and attribution, inclusive manners, representing the collective work to others

13 To Participate in the Proposal
Express interest by March 5 :

14 To be considered for funding in year 1
Beginning Funds for local backbone support (up to 20K for 2 years) no less than 3 committed founding members for your regional alliance. 1 page case for your capacity to create a viable regional alliance and pathway description of the local issue(s) that the pathway will address and why this is an important issue for the region.

15 To be considered for funding in year 1
Intermediate or Advanced Pathway map that shows your current status description of how you would like to grow and strengthen your existing programming to make it a more robust pathway. Specific request for implementation funds Optional request for back bone support

16 Selection of First Set of Regional Alliances
Beginning: We will be looking for strength of commitment, prior history of working together, and capacity for success. Intermediate/Advanced: We will be looking for an understanding of what is currently working on the ground and a viable strategy for strengthening these efforts through collaboration both regionally and with program partners Collectively the initial set will need to span a range of local issues, are geographically distributed, and address the issues of diversity that underpin the INCLUDES program. Everyone can be in the COP and is eligible to apply to be a Regional Alliance in later years.

17 Implementation Funds Build lasting local capacity (e.g. through professional development for those engaged in pathway implementation) Support adaptation or implementation of tested materials and models including those developed by the program partners or by other regional alliances. Are part of a plan leading to long term sustainability of the regional alliance and pathway (e.g. transitional funding for teacher participation to enable development of long term local funding) Test missing pieces that will link together existing pathway elements Majority of funds will be used to build capacity through work with national partners
