Opening Activity: May 15, 2017 Pick up your chromosomes from front table. Explain the products of meiosis: How many chromosomes compared to parent cell? How many daughter cells? 3. Find your modeling chromosomes packet from last week, look at very back page. Please make a change, color blindness to widow’s peak. I can… Create homologous pairs with variations of genes. Homework: Complete Modeling Chromosomes
2
Homologous Chromosomes:
Paired Chromosomes, one from each parent. They have the same genes in the same locations. Example:
3
Goals for Today: Follow along on the w/s to complete parts A-C.
Get signed off on pages 1-2, no sign off page 3 Complete W/S and turn in today. If you do not finish up to the sign off on page 2 - HW 3. Begin Modeling Meiosis W/S. CLEAN UP – carefully put the chromosomes in Ziploc bag with group names/period. Be sure they lay flat and DO NOT TOUCH.
4
Opening Activity: May 16, 2017 You created three different sizes of chromosomes yesterday. Why are there three different sizes? How is this similar to a human cell? Two chromosomes that code for the same genes, are the same size and came from each parent are called… Review the vocab sheet at your table, What is the difference between genotype and phenotype. Give an example of a recessive allele. What does it mean? I can… Create homologous pairs with variations of genes. Homework: Complete Modeling Chromosomes

Goals for Today: Complete Modeling Chromosomes- TURN IN.
Pick up at front table: Modeling Meiosis w/s, Meiosis Notes & Diagrams, Meiosis picture handout, chalk. Follow along on the w/s to Modeling Meiosis, each person fills out their own. Tape Diagram/Notes into NB and complete WITH COLOR as you go through the activity. Use COLOR to draw chromosomes for page 2. Get signed off on page 2 and continue to last page. CLEAN UP – all airheads to front.
7
Opening Activity: May 17, 2017 Pick up your chromosomes and Meiosis Reference Guide from front table. Put your two long chromosomes in front of you. Compare the alleles on one chromosome. Same? Different? Explain why. Compare the alleles on homologous chromosomes. Same? Different? Explain why. Homework: Meiosis/Genetics Quiz 5/23 I can… Use airhead chromosomes to model meiosis.

MEIOSIS I: Prophase I Model and define on your drawings: Crossing Over: Homologous pairs swap DNA
9
MEIOSIS I: Metaphase I Model and define on your drawings: Independent Assortment: Homologous pairs line up in the middle randomly, resulting in different possible combinations of alleles.

The 4 basic steps of Meiosis
1) Chromosomes Duplicate- (DNA Replication) 2) Homologous Chromosomes Line Up and Separate 3) Chromosomes line up and Sister Chromatids Separate. 4) Result- 4 cells with half the number of chromosomes as the original cell.

Goals for Today: Work on Meiosis Modeling – Stamp page 2
Complete Meiosis Modeling w/s – DUE TODAY! Drawing Meiosis Activity – Due Friday 5/19

Meiosis/Genetics Quiz 5/23
Opening Activity: May 18, 2017 I will come around to stamp your meiosis drawings from yesterday. Be sure it is taped in. Explain two steps that take place during meiosis that will increase the chances for each gamete being unique from each other. If a cell had 10 chromosomes, how many different combinations are possible for metaphase 1? I can… Draw pictures of how cells create unique gametes. Homework: Meiosis/Genetics Quiz 5/23

Turn in any meiosis work, wrapping up today
Opening Activity: May 19, 2017 Turn in any meiosis work, wrapping up today In a gamete, how many alleles for each trait will each daughter cell have? If we say the following about a sand dollar: 2n = 52. What do you know about the sand dollar? I can… Explain asexual and sexual reproduction. Explain how one trait is inherited. Homework: Meiosis & Genetics Quiz 5/23 Science Test 5/25

Comparing Reproductive Strategies….
In your journal write the following during your gallery walk: Similarities you see among organisms Differences you see among organisms. Advantages/Disadvantages of sexual reproduction. Advantages/Disadvantages of asexual reproduction.
