Functions of the Nervous System
Chapter 9 Functions of the Nervous System
2
Nervous System Allows us to feel, think, remember, and move
Nervous tissue is found in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves Composed of Neurons: nerve cells, that are specialized to react to physical & chemical changes in their surroundings
3
Neuron Components Cell Body- the rounded area that contains 2 different types of extensions 1. dendrites- numerous branches; receive the electromechanical messages. 2. Axons- extensions that send information; usually 1 axon. Myelin sheath- covers axons; formed by Schwann Cells
5
Nervous Tissue made up of: Neurons: nerve cells
Neuroglial cells: helper cells “glia” = glue Support and bind components of nervous tissue to each other and to blood vessels Function similarly to connective tissue in other organ systems
6
Nervous System Organs in the Nervous System can be divided into 2 groups: 1. Central Nervous System (CNS): consists of the brain & spinal cord 2. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): Connects the CNS to other body parts.
7
Functions 3 general functions 1. sensory 2. integrative 3. motor
8
Sensory Sensory receptors detect changes inside and outside the body
External environmental factors: light and sound Internal environmental factors: body temperature and oxygen concentration
9
Integrative Interneurons transfer and interpret results
10
Motor Send appropriate impulses/messages to the muscles and glands for movement.
