To save To teach To change 1. The Spirit made some commitments to the apostles that He did not make to us or all men A. These commitments were expressed through Jesus 1. Jn. 14:26b miraculously bring to your remembrance all things Jesus did and said 2. Acts 1:5 promise to be baptized with the HS 3. Acts 1:8 the promise to be given miraculous power 4. Acts 8:14, 17 receive the ability to give miraculous abilities to others (even Philip, whom the apostles said was full of the Holy Spirit, could not do this) 5. Eph. 3:5 reveal new things B. Unique commitments to apostles Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, . . . Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:14, 17 NKJV) To save To teach To change 1. The Spirit made some commitments to the apostles that He did not make to us or all men A. These commitments were expressed through Jesus 1. To save us - “The HS didn’t die for us—what does He do to save us?” A. Acts 5:3 All sin is against the HS—you can’t go to heaven with the Spirit’s forgiveness B. Eph. 3:5, 11 He was involved in the eternal planning, purpose, and preparation that produced salvation. C. Mt. 28:19 His authority is equally important at baptism as is Jesus’ D. 1 Cor. 6:11 saints are washed, sanctified, and justified by the Spirit (terms of forgiveness) E. To Teach You Eph. 4:11 Heb. 10:15 Rom. 8:12-16 To save To teach To change 3. To teach us A. Eph. 4:11 1. where do evangelists, pastors, and teachers get their knowledge to teach? A/P still are their teachers 2. where did apostles and prophets get their knowledge? HS was their teacher 3. without The Spirit’s commitment to teach, we would be ignorant of all that was said and done before and after Jesus’s life on earth. 4. We don’t have to hear the Spirit’s voice to know He is committed to teaching us—we read His words. B. Heb. 10:15 1. He is a witness to what He teaches—not something He was taught 2. The Spirit witnesses to us (that a once-for-all mankind sacrifice has been made) by what He said in the past—but notice “witness” is in the present tense! By His past words, He is still our witness, teacher. C. Rom. 8: His witness to us is more than history of the past—it includes assurance v how did the Spirit teach you to put the deeds of the body to death Col. 3:5 how? v2 v14 how does the Spirit lead us 2 Sam. 12:9 Who killed Uriah? 1. The soldiers at Rabbah and David, by writing the orders which accomplished what he intended 2. We are led by the Spirit when we follow the written orders of the Spirit, which accomplish. . . v15 how do we receive the Spirit? Jn. 12:48 how does man receive, or not receive, Jesus? v16 how does the Spirit witness with our spirit? His past words reach the spirit of every Christian today, confirming that we are children of God. (Rom. 10:10; Acts 2:38) - those same words will witness to convict the lost that they are not children of God The Spirit’s Commitment to You

To Change You Gal. 5:22-23 Col. 3:12-15 To save To teach To change 4. To produce good results inside and outside of us (bear fruit; fruit of Spirit) A. When put into action, the knowledge The Spirit teaches changes our lives. B. Gal. 5:22-23 (Eph. 5:9) 1. this is what the Spirit wants to produce inside and outside of all men 2. For the Spirit to bring these things out of me, what must the Spirit put in me? 3. To get fruit, you have to start with the right seed a. the gospel seed produces all of these, when the seed is constantly fed and watered b. The Spirit will not produce this fruit w/o our participation-- C. Col. 3:12-15 1. To put these things on me, what must I put in me? (note that these are also the fruit of the Spirit) 2. Who do I get the seed from if I want this fruit? HS 3. These are all things that we must learn, understand, and do (and then repeat, repeat, repeat) D. The Spirit is committed to and producing this fruit in you for the glory of God and benefit of everyone around you. 1. If I do not add peace to my marriage and my spouse is in a spiritual battle guarding against outbursts of wrath and trying to put on kindness---what does this say about the Spirit’s commitment? mine? 2. If in my habits, I cannot control my mind and desires until I have a ___-- what’s the Spirit’s commitment? 3. If I daily pray for, think about, and look opportunities to talk about truth with the lost, what is being produced in me, regardless of the response of others? 4. The Spirit is committed to making you holy, separate, devoted---making your spirit holy as He is holy. - by the way, Jesus is equally responsible for this fruit (Phil. 1:11) The Spirit’s Commitment to You
