1
Photochemical vs. Industrial Smog
2
Both industrial and photochemical smog are types of air pollution.
Decrease in air quality since beginning of Industrial Revolution Why? Increased burning of fossil fuels to provide energy. Both types formed as a result of smoke released from industrial processes. However, there are differences between the two types.
3
Industrial smog occurs when the smoke (particles) and sulfur dioxide produced from burning coal merges with fog and creates a yellowish-brown-colored haze close to ground level.
4
Photochemical smog forms as the result of increased usage of all fossil fuels, including gasoline and the burning of trees and organic waste. When the primary pollutants from these react with sunlight, they also form hazardous secondary pollutants
5
London was known for having problems with industrial smog during the early 1950s
Los Angeles and New York frequently suffer episodes of photochemical smog
