Impacts on the Atmosphere
Chapter 9 Lesson 4
2
Types of Air Pollution Smog
Burning of fossil fuels releases nitrogen and carbon compounds into the air Chemicals combine with sunlight and form ozone, a major component of smog
3
Types of Air Pollution Acid Precipitation
Burning of fossil fuels releases nitrogen and sulfur into the air, they combine with water to form acid rain This makes the water and soil more acidic which harms organisms
4
Types of Air Pollution Particulate Matter
Solid particles of smoke, dust, and dirt occur naturally from volcanoes and forest fires Humans produce from burning of fossil fuels This can cause respiratory problems.
5
Types of Air Pollution Global Warming
Burning fossil fuels releases CO2 into the air CO2 traps heat in the Earth’s atmosphere because of the greenhouse effect This can lead to global warming. Problem: sea levels rise, stronger and more frequent storms, negative effects on ecosystems
6
What do smog, acid precipitation, particulate matter, and global warming all have in common?
They are all caused by burning of fossil fuels!
7
Air Quality Index (AQI)
Scale that ranks levels of ozone and other air pollutants Based on a scale of 0 to 300 with 300 being the worst

9
Positive Actions Montreal Protocol: phase out CFCs
Kyoto Protocol: reduce emission of greenhouse gases Clean Air Act: sets limits on air pollution, we have seen improvements from this
10
What can you do? Use renewable resources instead of fossil fuels
Solar power Wind Power Geothermal Energy
11
What can you do? Buy energy efficient appliances and vehicles
12
