6th Grade Orientation Although your middle school student is becoming more independent, you are still the most influential person in his/her life! Here are some tips for success.

Lockers. 6th grade students are always anxious about opening up their lockers. Locks will be sent home with students tomorrow. Practice opening the lock with your child.

Look over your child’s schedule with him/her. Get acquainted with the names of teachers and what their day looks like. Help him/her get organized before he/she enters.

Show interest in your child’s studies by talking to him/her daily about what’s going on in class. Ask what your child is learning and don’t take “nothing” for an answer. Use PowerSchool to look over student progress and Homework Hotline or his/her student planner for details.

Your child will be pushed academically. He/she may experience failure or struggle for the first time. Talk to your child about failure and/or struggles! Learning from one’s mistakes is the best opportunity a kid can have!

Be sure that your child attends school on a regular basis. Even if he/she is absent for illness or another valid reason, he/she needs to keep up with his studies. Ask your child to check in with his/her teachers when he/she returns. Your child needs to be an active participant as well.

Know your child’s friends. Get to know your child’s use of social media and technology. Be proactive with stopping the drama.

Encourage your child to get involved. Take advantage of the clubs and activities that are available. Great opportunity to meet new kids and interact in a setting other than the classroom.

Contact counselors, administrators, and teachers periodically. Come to conferences and events. Be a full partner in your child’s education.

Odds and Ends -Update InfoSnap -Get comfortable with PowerSchool -Purchase gym uniforms -Don’t send materials with your child tomorrow. Lockers will not have locks.
