1 Data Collection Solar Oven Lab

2 Quantitative Data vs. Qualitative Data
Numbers Specific data Data Tables Graphs Diagrams w/ labels Ex. Time, Temperature, Height in Centimeters, etc… Words Descriptions Observations Specific or generalized data Diagrams w/ descriptions Ex. Materials used, how it was built, how much the Smore’s melted, etc…

3 Thermometer Temperature
Things to Notice Together: 1. The inside circle shows degrees Celsius. The outside circle shows degrees Fahrenheit. 2. Each line on the Celsius scale is ten degrees. Each line on the Fahrenheit scale is 25 degrees. 3. This thermometer goes from degrees C, degrees F. Temperature a measure of energy within an object, measured in ºC Thermometer The Thermometer must be placed in such a way that the end is not touching any surface You should be able to read the temp without opening your box The “0” end should be pointed down towards the ground

4 Time Measurement taken every 30seconds for a total of 10:30min. Metrics Use a metric ruler and measure in centimeters (cm) when constructing your solar oven. Need to measure out the specifics of your Solar Oven so that you can label your sketches/diagrams You need to measure to different heights to cook from in your oven.

5 Graphing Data Always show 2 variables
Line Graphs - Best used for looking at changes over time, such as the change in temperature in a solar oven over time. Always show 2 variables Independent Variable: (X axis) Usually shows time intervals (Ex. Time) Dependent Variable: (Y axis) Usually changes, depends on what occurs in the experiment (Ex. Temperature) Multiple sets of data to compare changes (2 heights of Smore’s) Use a ruler Label Everything! Make a key Example of a Line Graph…

6 Safety The inside of your oven can become VERY HOT! Use caution and use oven mitts as needed. The Thermometers are made of glass and can break. Please notify the teacher immediately if one breaks – do not touch the broken glass. Working outside – classes are in session around us, must be quiet and be on task at all times Do NOT look directly at the Sun. Clean up all supplies – points will be deducted from your group if you are not tidy!
