1 Environmental Hydrology Visualization
Have: Vis5D SGI Explorer Fluid Tracers VisAD Cave5D nViz GeoVis… Need: Access to Distributed Large datasets Cross platform Cluster algorithms Lightweight component Auto-data translators Metadata support Heterogeneous format support Component Libraries Real-time GIS/Model Distance collaboration Vector/raster Nested grid

2 Flow Modeling in Large Scale Systems
Mississippi RiverWeb Consortium: Computational science in informal education GIS: Terrain, Bathymetry, Land Use Linked data (fisheries, flow, etc) 2D flow models Visualization Digital River Basin: Multi-user simulation, high-resolution visualization, multi-modal interaction (location detection, touch interface…)

3 Digital River Basin Model driven query User driven query
Composite data Metadata X 20

4 Status Report infrastructure/code development completed since October 1 Prototype coupled model/visualization application for museum project: High resolution plasma display Inter-processor communication “Single user” highly interactive VTK/Performer

5 Status Report: Efforts Underway
Next phase coupled model/visualization (alpha - 12/00) Multiple high resolution displays Multiple users Multi-processor Full database interaction (postgres) Coupled model (runoff/channel) Web portal interface (9/01)

6 Status Report: Efforts Underway
Re-examination of high-resolution parallel overland flow model (funded outside of PACI EHAT) kinematic wave equation- time-dependent two dimensional nonlinear problem on a large domain additive schwartz method to solve the large domain finite difference method to discretize. Implicit scheme in time direction to solve instability. First-order Taylor series expansion to linearize the nonlinear algebraic system at each time step. Scalable parallel preconditioners and Krylov subspace methods including ICC, ILU, block Jacobi and so on to solve the linearized algebraic system.

7 Projected Impact What is the current usage of the infrastructure/code? Or what is the projected usage during the next 6 months? Museum: 100,000 in first 2-3 months What is the current community interest in such infrastructure? USEPA Fox River Management NSF Illinois River … How broad might the community impact be? Necessary interest in multiple communities

8 Interconnections: What infrastructure that you are developing is dependent on other Alliance or EH infrastructure? PETSc, HDF, VisBench, Globus (poss.) What Alliance people outside EH do you interact with? Data Mining and Visualization (Baker, Welge, Folk, Rajlich, Khakshour, etc.) EOT (Curtis, Sonin) Government (Prudhomme, et al.)
